Boat Detailing FAQ

Boat Detailing FAQ

How long will a wax application last to offer protection to my boat's gelcoat finish?

In South Florida, typically 1-3 months.

Notes about wax application protection:  When a boat's finish is properly maintained after a wax application is applied, the longer it will offer proper protection.  How long a wax application will offer protection is heavily influenced on how much exposure to outdoor elements the boat is subject to.

How long will a Polymer Sealant application offer protection to my boat's gelcoat finish?

In South Florida, typically 6 months.  The better a finish is maintained after a wax application is applied, the longer it will offer proper protection.

Notes about polymer sealant application protection:  When a boat's finish is properly maintained after a polymer sealant has been applied, the longer it will offer proper protection.  How long a polymer sealant application will offer protection is heavily influenced on how much exposure to outdoor elements the boat is subject to.

My hull is oxidized. Can you bring back the shine?

The shine can usually be brought back to a shine with buffing using a heavy compound, but in order to last and not re - appear proper steps must be performed and the finished worked must be protected with a wax or polymer sealant. Depending on how heavy the oxidation is, in order to effectively sanding or wet-sanding is initially required followed up by buffing with a rotary buffer with heavy & medium compounds, then machine polishing and finally applying wax or polymer sealant as protection.  If the oxidation is light, it may be sufficient to bypass sanding steps and begin with heavy buffing process.  The most important part of the process to avoid future oxidation is to apply a wax or sealant and keep applying a wax or sealant on a regular basis and to perform future boat washing with proper soap which will not stripe away the wax or polymer sealant.  A test spot (apx 2' x 2')on the oxidized surface can be performed on the oxidized surface.
